Quando Son Più Lontan

SATB divisi, a cappella

A setting of Yvo Barry’s 16th century tale of unrequited love. Shifting meters highlight the rhythm of the words, and a virtuosic soprano solo at the climax of the piece conveys the passion and fire of the text.

Duration: 3:00   Difficulty: 5 (advanced)

Text: Yvo Barry (f. 1525–1550)

Quando Son Più Lontan

Quando son più lontan de’ bei vostri occhi
Che m’han fatto cangiar voglia et costumi,
Cresce la fiamma et mi conduce a morte;
Et voi, che per mia sorte
Potresti raffrenar la dolce fiamma,
Mi negate la fiamma che m’infiamma.

Translation

When I am farther away from your beautiful eyes
That have made me change my desire and my habits,
The flame grows and leads me to death;
And you, who for my fate
Could restrain the sweet flame,
You deny me the flame that inflames me.
